Skegness, the Blackpool of the East Coast

Skegness is one of the most traditional seaside resorts on the east coast. The railways were responsible for its growth into the holiday destination it is now; before that, it was a small fishing village, consisting of about 300 people!

The railway arrived in 1875, with a massive tourist boost engineered by the now famous poster of the Jolly Fisherman. Drawn by John Hassal, the "Jolly Fisherman" was first displayed in London's Kings Cross railway station, and used to advertise excursions to the resort.
